چکیده

We report tests of redundant arrays of IDE disk drives for use in offline high energy physics data analysis. Parts costs of total systems using commodity EIDE disks are now at the $4000 per Terabyte level. Disk storage prices have now decreased to the point where they equal the cost per Terabyte of Storage Technology tape silos. The disks, however, offer far better granularity; even small institutions can afford to deploy systems. Our tests include reports on software RAID-5 systems running under Linux 2.4 using Promise Ultra 100TMdisk controllers. RAID-5 protects data in case of a single disk failure by providing parity bits. Tape backup is not required. Journaling file systems are used to allow rapid recovery from crashes. Our data analysis strategy is to encapsulate data and CPU processing power. Analysis for a particular part of a data set takes place on the PC where the data resides. The network is only used to put results together. We explore three methods of moving data between sites; internet transfers, hot pluggable IDE disks in FireWire cases, and DVD-R disks. Keywords—RAID, EIDE, FireWire.

Terabyte IDE RAID-5 Disk Arrays

High energy physics experiments are currently recording large amounts of data and in a few years will be recording prodigious quantities of data. New methods must be developed to handle this data and make analysis at universities possible. We examine some techniques that exploit recent developments in commodity hardware. We report on tests of redundant arrays of integrated drive electronics (ID...

A Study of Disk Performance Optimization

A STUDY OF DISK PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION by Richard S. Gray Response time is one of the most important performance measures associated with a typical multi-user system. Response time, in turn, is bounded by the performance of the input/output (I/O) subsystem. Other than the end user and some external peripherals, the slowest component of the I/O subsystem is the disk drive. One standard strateg...

Useful Classes of Redundant Arrays for Imaging Applications

We discuss several classes of redundant arrays. These arrays have applications for indirect imaging in a variety of elds including coded-aperture imaging, interferomet-ric radio imaging, and optical imaging in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. The speciic classes we will discuss are all based on Galois elds and include: antisymmet-ric redundant arrays (ARAs) which have as a subset the hex...

Uniformly Redundant Arrays

Uniformly Redundant Arrays (URA’s) are two–dimensional binary arrays with constant sidelobes of their periodic autocorrelation function. They are widely agreed upon to be optimum mask patterns for coded aperture imaging, particularly in imaging systems with a cyclic coded mask. In this paper, a survey of all currently known construction methods for URA’s is given and the sizes and open fraction...

More Ways to Play

This year marks a significant change in the recent history of hard disk drive development. During the final years of the last century and for the last two years the areal density of magnetic recording had been increasing at rates close to or exceeding 100% per year. That meant that each generation of hard disk drive had a digital data capacity that was close to twice that of the previous genera...
